Interview: Headphonaut (Thomas Mathie)
Divinations is a set of five serene, non-rhythmic atmospheric pieces, especially suitable for relaxation and going deep.
I’m especially interested in the music as a catalyst for inner work, relaxation and healing. This collection is intended as a complement to meditation, yoga, tai chi and similar activities, as well as wellness treatments of all kinds.
All of these pieces were pioneering efforts for me, in one way or another. Exquisite Divination of Patterns was my first laptop/softsynth piece, and Snowdance in Starlight features my first use of acoustic guitar in an ambient mode.
The final piece, Ensō, is a live laptop/softsynth improvisation, from an art show in May 2012. Avian and human voices were added during postproduction in May 2014.
The Japanese word “Ensō” means “a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create”. (More details in the Wikipedia article.) This continues the “reflections on the creative process” theme explored in Exquisite Divination of Patterns and Radiant Perception, and suitably closes the several circular paths which led to this album’s release.
Review by John Shanahan, Hypnagogue:
I have been listening to Divinations quietly throughout several full work days, and left it looping in the Hypnagogue office. While I do recommend breaking out the headphones to get all the detail work, this album truly excels as an atmosphere enhancer. Whether you use it during your mediation or yoga or just letting it tint the air as you go about your daily routine, this is a release you’ll come back to. Absolutely worth listening to. Excellent work from eyes cast down.
